Amazon, bringing Christmas all year long
Sure feels good to have the post office guy delevering this to my place…
I’m happy as a kid with a new toy.
Decent bandwidth
After 1 year, yes, you read it right, I finally have the Internet bandwidth I’m paying for.
This may sound something easy to accomplish, but try and explain ADSL line synchronization to the guys at Tech Support of my ISP. Ohh, and if you’re ‘one of those persons who use Linux’, there is no way to support your problem, even though the problem has NOTHING to do with your computer.
On the first few calls I was getting pissed because they would not tell me what the tests were and I didn’t have a Windows machine around. One day I give it a try and said I was using Microsoft Windows XP SP2 Professional. Well, it turns out, all I had to do was to visit the Customer section of the ISP website and do one of those Speed Tests, where you receive/send 1Mb of information.
Luckily I was using Windows to do that.
Big story short (or not that short) I now have what I’ve been paying for:

Going back home - The end of vacation
Seems like yesterday I wrote about going on vacation. Well, unfortunately it wasn’t, and my vacations are over.
Time to get back to real life. Traffic, quick meals, stress, more traffic, away from family, more traffic … Not to mention an entire day wasted because of the flight. It’s unbelievable how a 2 hour flight can occupy the whole day (only in Portugal).
The small things in life are becoming more enjoyable by the day. Staying home with my family (wife and parents) and having great talks during dinner (I’m getting old!).
Time to remove that /away and set the status /back.
Dual-head configuration, #2
When I got to my parents house I decided to do a clean install of Ubuntu 7.10. Like I mentioned before, I’m not a fan of upgrade.
After installation both monitors were working. Secondary monitor was working as a clone, which didn’t used to happen on previous releases. I tried using the instructions of my previous post, which I’ve been told that work quite well (and for the incoming links to the blog).
With the ATI property drivers available on 7.10 repositories, that set of instructions will not work (Bug number 54680). The _only_ way I was able to get it to work as by installing a more recent version using the ATI Catalyst 8.1 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver (available here).
Even though I still don’t have the perfect dual-head configuration1, it’s working OK.
- I can only open Firefox on one monitor at a time; I can’t drag windows from one monitor to the other, etc [↩]
Going on vacation
One thing I never blogged was about my work. Let me fix that.
I started working on a Portuguese bank, as system administrator of their entire infrastructure (900 servers). They call it Distributed Systems Operation. Five months after I started, the company responsible for that team changed, and they were trying to keep the employees but didn’t want to give them any conditions whatsoever.
Not the mention the weird schedules (1AM-7AM, for example) we had to do. The job was critical, and as so, there had to be at least 3 people there no matter what hour.
I decided that, for the money they were paying, and the conditions they were offering, it was a no go.
I’m now partially employed. I give classes (CompTIA, Cisco, Microsoft and my own lectures). But that can be quite boring and it only comes from time to time.
Since I’m spend all my days sitting in this chair, I decided to visit my family and my home town. It’s a good time for my wife too, so we leaving Wednesday at 6AM to Azores, Terceira
Mamma’s food, here I come!
Pingus
I found this game by accident and I’m completely addicted to it. I was a big fan of Lemmings, but I never bothered to Google for a clone on the F/LOSS world.
I recommended this game to every Lemmings fan. The game is available on official repositories, even though it’s not the latest version. GetDeb.net has 0.7.2.
There is also a Win32 version available, which was pretty good for my wife because she liked what she saw.
I also found a package with extra maps. I’ll check that out once I beat the ones I have now.
Responsible use of GPG!
I’m not a fan of comics, but this one is really interesting, because I care allot about the web-of-trust.

Pimp my IRSSI
After reading the great post by Aaron Toponce on how he pimped his IRSSI I decided to do the same.
Before talking about my scripts for IRSSI, I’ll talk about TSS (Terminal ScreenSaver). Like the name describes, it runs a screensaver on your terminal, with great ASCII graphics. I took a printscreen to submit it to Debian Package of the Day, so feel free to check it out.
As for my IRSSI, I use the following scripts:
keepnick.pl - Regains your nickname when it becomes available.
nickserv.pl - To authenticate to NickServer@services., on Freenode (or any other network).
screen_away.pl - Automatacly sets your status as away when you detach the screen (this is a great one! Thanks Aaron).
trackbar.pl - Creates a bar on the last message you read, so you can continue reading thins on a channel/query when you go back to that window.
crapbuster.pl - I use it with: /set crapbuster_levels JOINS PARTS QUITS NICKS CLIENTCRAP CRAP MODE KICKS to ignore some stuff from channels.
As for the theme, I’m a fan of the default one.
All of this running in my perfect Debian install on the NSLU2!
TSPC - Tunnel Setup Protocol
Well, since my Linksys NSLU2 (the one with Debian) is running very smoothly, I decided to test something new. IPv6!
All the documentation I founded was old or outdated, so I created a new Wiki page on Ubuntu’s Wiki on how to setup a IPv6-In-IPv4 tunnel.
I’ve been using it mostly for IRC, but I’m sure I’ll test new things out ASAP.
Happy Holidays
Best wishes to all Planet Ubuntu readers and all my fellow colleagues from Ubuntu Members.
It has been a pleasure working with all of you. Looking forward for the next one!
Regards,
Tiago
