This should be the type of post that should be published on a micro-blog, but I like it so much I thought it deserved a more broader audience.

First of all, I want to make one thing clear. No, I don’t live in the USA. No, I don’t give a flying fuck about politics (from the US, or from my own country). It may be sad I think this way, but that’s just the way it is. Luckily for me, I’m writing in my own journal, so I couldn’t care less if the haters think I’m this or that.

To the post itself …

Recently, and followers/frieds/subscribers of identi.ca and Jaiku are probably sick and tired of reading posts about this, I found a great website. Freedocumentaries.org (you can actually leave now, if you don’t want my personal opinion).

The webmasters don’t do any complex job, but the fun is sometimes in the simple things, and the collection of freely available videos these guys have compiled is somewhat amazing. I found myself, LITERALLY, obsessed on wanting to view most of them.

My favorite production of all times is Loose Change 911. These guys started the process of creating this documentary a few years ago, and I just recently saw the Final Cut. The things you see on the film will make your jaw drop to the ground. It will also, however, make you fear for your life (at least I do) knowing what those in charge can do, without any consequences.

That day changed the life of millions of people, either being for their losses or because of the rage against the people they have elected to control the country.

Other films I definitely recommend are ‘Hacking Democracy’, ‘Sex Slaves’, ‘The Road to Guantanamo’, ‘The War on Democracy’ and finally, ‘Freedom to Fascism’.

I enjoyed watching them, but at the same time, it disgusts me of living in a world this rotten!

If you’re one of those who thinks the end justifies the means, well, you better pray to $YOUR_GOD you never be treated/suffer like some stories you will hear.

I don’t really like to publish articles related to micro-blogging on my weblog (wow, that was so Web 2.0). Still, I thought I should update my current status regarding these types of services.

I switched from the big-fat-whale-who-never-got-to-sea to Jaiku, and I’ve been a happy user of their service for a few weeks now. IM and SMS work flawlessly and I really like their interface for when I pay the site a visit. Jaiku also has a IRC feeling, because of the possibility to create channels (regular #channels) so that people interested in that topic can subscribe (join).

I’ll continue to use Jaiku, as long as the community keeps using it; these types of services are nothing without a community behind it. Leave a comment with your email if you want an invite.

The new kid in town is identi.ca, which was the creation of a very needed service of this kind. Bonus points for being free software, licensed under the GNU Affero GPL. For obvious reasons, I HAD to sign up for this one too. I’m sure, if things continue to improve like they have been, that identi.ca will provide a great service for everyone interested in micro-blogging. Actually, identi.ca is already a winner. Good job!

Matt Lee made a good comic explaining identi.ca and micro-blogging in general. Image.

So, if you want to read the regular rant about my job, what I’m having for dinner and allot more useless stuff, feel free to stalk me:

There has been quite a few posts about the type of content fetched by Planet Ubuntu. Some say the content should only be related to Ubuntu, while others support the idea of having personal, not related to Ubuntu, posts.

Suggestion …

Using Gentoo.org as example:

Planet Gentoo is limited to Gentoo-related posts. The author uses a tag or category. Then theres the Gentoo Universe, which is also written by Gentoo developers and collaborators but who is not limited to Gentoo-related articles.

Creating an Ubuntu Universe would result in duplicate content, but I believe it’s the easiest and more efficient way of separating content. Everyone wins.

FSF has launched the new and improved Shop, where you can buy true geek swag. From shirts to autographed books by Richard Stallman, to your own plush gnu. They also have a 50 stickers pack that look pretty good on any laptop.

Most of the shirts I want are only available on XL size, but I’ve been told they will re-stock soon with smaller sizes. There has also been reports of problems with the checkout form, which has a small (30) characters limit for the ’street’ field and ‘zipcode’ (10). This is a big problem for people with big street addresses, hopefully, it will also be fixed soon.

Just a tip for those who want to help a good cause.

P.S.: If you find any errors with Django/mySQL when visiting the site, please report them on #gnu - Freenode.

Since the installation of Ubuntu 8.04 I can’t use my 3G UMTS Modem, a Huawei e220.

I’ve tried pretty much everything I can remember, and I ran out of options to search for on Google (I even found, and tested, my own instructions for 6.06). Apparently there are a few miracle drivers developed for this modem, but that didn’t work either. What pisses me off the most is that I need this to work, and I’ve been ignoring it for some time … Not anymore. This modem has to work.

Anyone having a similar issue? Any ideas/tips you may want to share?

Update: People were kind enough to help me out solving this issue. I know have my modem properly working. Please check the comments for more information. Thanks!

I decided to go with Vodafone Mobile Connect Card, and screenshots are available here: files.goukihq.org/images/vodafone

I’ve been following a discussion on Planet Debian about which VPS Provider to choose from. I’m a SliceHost customer and I’m happy with the service. However, sometimes 256MB of RAM isn’t enough (rarely) and the other plans are way out of my league (read pocket).

The solution to this would be to rent a dedicated server and share among friends, dividing the bill accordingly. Since I couldn’t find anyone interested in ‘wasting money with it’, I turn to the geeks for help.

Are you interested in sharing a Server with me? Ideally, I would set up something like Steve did with xen-hosting.org, I’m just not sure I can afford a machine like theirs.

I’m also thinking about sharing it with 3 other people, and leaving all domUS (aka Virtual Machines or VPS) with 1GB of memory (4GB is a must for this server). Each person would also have 3 IP addresses to use as they please.

If you want a good server for a great price, let me know.

Obviously I’m interested in doing this with someone I can trust (ideally).

I now have more than 50 keywords filters in place, since SpamAssassin and all the other crap I was using didn’t quite work. Using keyword filters has proven successful, cutting the spam from 200 messages per day to less than 30.

With the inclusion of these new filters there is a strong risk I may lose legitimate email. Unfortunately, the Internet has come to this; poor usage makes us take extreme measures.

So, if you sent me an email, two days gone by and you didn’t get a reply, please send it again, and change the subject.

This applies to all my accounts: FSF, work, @goukihq.org and @ubuntu.com

The less creative you get with the subject, the better the chances of me actually getting the message.

I also convert all incoming email to plain text. That means I don’t receive ANY attachments or HTML crap that may come on the message. If you need to send me something, contact me first. I’ll talk you through it.

Dan was kind enough to create a status email to let everyone know how things are going. Please read it on the mailing list archive.

Contrary to what we initially though, we won’t have a release in time of 8.04.1. Due to the number of active developers, it would be hard to have something done in time. We will, however, have a release ready for Intrepid Ibex, on October. You can help (please do) test the daily builds, who should be workable in a few weeks, before the official release.

We’re still in need of more active people to help us, so feel free to subscribe to the list and say ‘hello’. Really, it’s ok to do that.

In the meanwhile, you can always use the Custom Gutsy or check psubuntu.com for installation instructions for 8.04.

The Wiki has also been update with a section describing how you can help.

Any help is welcome, and we really need it.
