I’ll share my computer with you
I’ve been following a discussion on Planet Debian about which VPS Provider to choose from. I’m a SliceHost customer and I’m happy with the service. However, sometimes 256MB of RAM isn’t enough (rarely) and the other plans are way out of my league (read pocket).
The solution to this would be to rent a dedicated server and share among friends, dividing the bill accordingly. Since I couldn’t find anyone interested in ‘wasting money with it’, I turn to the geeks for help.
Are you interested in sharing a Server with me? Ideally, I would set up something like Steve did with xen-hosting.org, I’m just not sure I can afford a machine like theirs.
I’m also thinking about sharing it with 3 other people, and leaving all domUS (aka Virtual Machines or VPS) with 1GB of memory (4GB is a must for this server). Each person would also have 3 IP addresses to use as they please.
If you want a good server for a great price, let me know.
Obviously I’m interested in doing this with someone I can trust (ideally).

If you’re willing to pay up front, and are happy for a UK based company - I’d highly reccomend you have a look at the dedicated server on http://www.register1.net/servers.php - they’re a ServerStream (http://www.serverstream.net/) company, and they do a great deal… QUAD CORE 2.4 GHz 64-bit Xeon 2MB Cache 1066Mhz FSB, 1Gb Ram, 250Gb HDD 500Gb Transfer - £49 per month…. the catch? 3 years up front :(
But - regarding your “great price” - what kind of prices are you looking at? (my email should be in the comment)
I might be interested. I currently pay $30/mo for a virtual dedicated with GoDaddy, but I’ve always been a little bit uncomfortable with them.
@Martin,
I really want something in a datacenter in UK. As for the ISPs you mentioned, I’ll take a look at them.
3 years up front is just too much for me. Even if this goes forward, I can’t guarantee we’ll be on the same ISP for 3 years.
As for the prices, I only said ‘great prices because of the machine one will have available compared to VPS prices. And most VPS providers don’t talk about processor time. Here, it would be a dual-xeon, for example, for 4 users max.
I still need to look for more providers before I have a price.
@Andre Stromme,
Great! First of all, consider adding your weblog to UbuntuWeblogs.org :P
Keep an eye open on the comments, since I’ll use them for now on to keep everyone updated on this.
P.S.: I got an email of someone who is already doing this and has more resources to share:

Tiago: Sounds good - I’m currently renting a 120MiB VPS with BitFolk, who are an excellent host.
However, I remember the “good old times” when I had a quarter rack in Manchester.
Let me know if you go any further!
