GNU/Linux SHOULD be free!

All the distribution wars make me sick. The fight for users is starting to get really annoying…

When a group of skilled people decide to start a new distribution, in order to make intuitive that are several things that can be done, for instances:

- eye-candy (allot of people go for it)
- good package manager
- good hardware support
- use of recent (yet stable) Linux kernel
- etc…

Now, with this I have no problem whatsoever.

Several new distributions are taking this ‘fight’ for users a couple of steps further. By having Flash, Macromedia, w32codecs, ATI drivers, nVidia drivers and other proprietary software.

If in order to gain users, these kind of changes have to be made, are you sure the users are really worth it? I, for one, will stop using Ubuntu if the new release comes with nVidia and ATI pre-compiled binaries. I’m sure allot of people will switch to Ubuntu, in this particular case, but, as me, other people don’t support the idea and will leave the community; most of these people are the ones that are willing to work and help improve the quality of the distribution in question.

Final note: Users who need the software mentioned above in the distribution, are not worth it!
